Plot
Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood for her green skin, and Glinda, a popular girl, form a friendship at Shiz University in the Land of Oz. To my surprise, "Evil" is the most anticipated movie of the year. Sure, movies like “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” and “Beetlejuice” kept me curious and cautiously optimistic, and I had the same feelings about “Evil” the first time I saw it. But the fantastic trailers won me over so much that every time they played before another movie, I couldn’t help but get excited. I’ve never seen the play, but “The Wizard of Oz” starring Judy Garland is my childhood favorite. I’ve even seen the dark yet charming unofficial sequel “Return to Oz” and Sam Raimi’s Tim Burton-esque “Oz the Great and Powerful” in preparation for this one. The hype is real, so I’d be nervous if it were to fall through — but it didn’t! The movie fan and critic in me loved the "Wicked," and I want to talk about why.
The acting was brilliant
Cynthia Erivo was spectacular as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Erivo brought gravitas to the portrayal of the famous villain, especially considering that this film is her origin story. I can’t forget Ariana Grande as Glinda. Musicians have always had trouble transitioning into acting, and Eminem’s performance in "8 Mile" is almost always in the conversation of successful artists. I’ve seen Grande in other movies, and "Hairspray Live!" was entertaining, but those performances didn’t prove she’s a pro. "Wicked" changes that, as this interpretation of Glinda was Grande’s idea from the start, and it’s all the better for it. The rest of the cast was adept, with Peter Dinklage as Dr.
As a musical, it was outstanding
John McCarthy. Dillamond and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar. Bailey steals the show as Tigelaar is an incredibly eccentric and hilarious supporting character who is easy to like. I have to give director Jon M. That credit. He directed this hugely ambitious, large-scale tentpole like a pro, and I respect him for pulling off what could have been a daunting task. While studios these days try to hide the fact that these movies are musicals, the trailers haven’t completely covered it up.

All of the songs and the musical sequences that follow were extraordinary, with “The Wizard And I” and “Defying Gravity” being the highlights for me. The songs are matched by impeccable choreography, costumes, and sets by Christopher Scott, Paul Tazewell, and Nathan Crowley. The CGI was incredible, bringing many elements, including the animals, to stunning life. It adds to the magical feel of this film, and the fact that the film cost a total of $145 million and had exceptional visuals is amazing.
