Plot
Clotaire, a rebellious local teenager, falls in love with her schoolmate Jackie – but gang violence leads her down a darker, more destructive path. After years apart, the ill-fated lovers find that every path they take brings them back together. “Beating Hearts” was the lowest-rated film in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival 2024 by French and international critics. They complained that the film was too long, full of clichés and misogynistic, that it copied several classic American films, that the love story was not believable, and that the two leads there was no chemistry and that the two teenagers who played the younger one were better. Several critics and regular moviegoers also wondered why this film was selected for Cannes’ main competition when there were better films out of competition or in the supporting cast that could have taken its place.

Screen International’s Cannes Film Festival awards ceremony took place in 2024. The jury gave the film 1.4 out of 4 stars, while the Cannes Chaos Reign jury gave the film 0.9 out of 4 stars and the Ioncinema jury gave it 1.6 out of 5 stars. In Metacritic’s article on the best and worst films of Cannes 2024, Beating Hearts was first included in the “disappointments” list. The first part with the kids is pretty good
For the sake of the audience, the film should have ended there. And Gilles Lellouche would have directed one of the best French teenage love stories of the decade. The rest of the film, the second act, is terrible. Actors François Civil and Adèle Exarchopoulos lack chemistry, their acting in this film is dull and uncompromising. I suspect that both actors should reconsider their respective careers in French cinema when newcomers Mallory Wanecque and Malik Frikah surpass them and steal the show in this confusing, mediocre film.
A stylized and tasteless man’s look
At first, the movie looks like a modern version of The Count of Monte Cristo… I mean the old story of a wronged young rebel who returns for revenge in search of his beloved. However, he stands out for his exaggerated and caricatured toxicity. And in the middle and end of the second act, the plot loses its credibility. On top of all the weight, the problem is the film’s strange determination to claim originality in every shot without ever achieving it.
What we have already seen
Every time it comes to making decisions, he always chooses the most formal, the most obvious. And so it is repeated: for three hours, with a good marketing and PR base, the French public is offered essentially a French blockbuster.
