Little movies like “Is Anybody There?” usually aren’t there, at least in terms of box office impact. This may have the potential to come back because of Sir Michael Caine’s role as a nursing home resident in 1980s England. Caine adds a bit of movie magic to the former magician – a cynicism with pathos and one of the greatest movie voices of all time. He teaches tricks to an equally eccentric 10-year-old boy, and the little guy entertains us and Caine with his project, capturing the deathly air of the dying inhabitants and the action that follows. That these two interesting characters can illuminate this dark landscape of death and despair is a tribute to the magic of the movie actor and to the movies themselves, however small, to the colossal American blockbusters.
