Two young nuns are drawn into a cat-and-mouse game in a strange man’s house. At the end is this statement: “Generative AI was not used in the making of this film.” Two Mormon missionaries, Paxton and Barnes, are lured into the home of the kind and knowledgeable Mr. Reed. He wants to discuss their beliefs and hear the good news. Too eager. When the theological discussion takes a dark turn, the nuns eagerly leave, too. If you can. Heretic is an intense, chilling and frighteningly honest discussion of the horror of ideas. It’s fun to see where each theme and twist takes the characters. I loved the thoughtful dialogue about myths, choices and uncomfortable topics like polygamy and Mormon underwear. Hugh Grant (Mr. Reed) attended this world premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. Grant seemed to enjoy his atypical “evil” role. He was well cast alongside Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher, both of whom were at the premiere, as they all seemed to be acting instinctively and with heart. East and Thatcher were once Mormons themselves, and Grant shared some of Mr. Reed’s traits. “I found,” Grant said of his character’s approach to religion that we had a lot in common. No wonder they were so good. They conveyed some of their own life experiences.
